a bear would likely be stronger pound for pound; i'll be interested to see an answer from someone that relies on more evidence
those of us that have answered so far have offered nothing more than personal opinion based on little more than air
BUT, those that reason that the gorilla would be better able or the bear less able based on the existence or lack of opposable thumbs...know zero about weightlifting
those of us that do work out, and more particularly with free weights, but the issue would be unaffected by "circuit" training machines, know very well that we do not use our opposable thumbs to grip the bar with when benching
we put the thumb on the same side of the bar as the fingers and let the bar rest in our palms or on the heels of our palms :-)

I think a gorilla is more intelligent, so it would be easier to convince one to lift weights. A bear without opposeable thumbs may struggle to properly grip the bar, and is more likely to start chewing on the seat.
