Sex ensures the survival of the human species. Love doesn't. Most people would consider survival to be a good thing.

All cases of love do not involve both the sex, hence love and sex on the scale of morality are not comparable. In the gamut of morality 'love' certainly has a superior place as compared to sex because love involves values besides being instinctive and emotional in nature. Sex on the other hand is purely instinctive but restraint on sexual feelings and behaviour is necessitated by social discipline among human species. In love there is no restraint on moral and ethical grounds. Hence, sex can never be better than love from moral stand point.

Depends on whos' morals you go by. Some cultures don't have taboos on sex without love and may communally raise the children. When people refer to morals they usually are only referring to Christian ideals. If population is needed after disaster wipes out too many, then sex is going to be more desireable to help increase numbers. In this scenario, love would be a hinderance to to growth. In our world, things that keeps the population down are good.

I assume you mean purely physical intercourse as opposed to expression of love physically???
Satisfaction of physical appetite is neither moral nor immoral - it is just satisfaction. Expression of love (feeling) by a physical act transcends pleasure of the body to that of the mind, heart, and soul as well.
So which is preferable? Depends on what mood you're in!!
