If you are getting pop-ups while you are offline, you have a virus or malware installed. You have probably picked up some junk programs through rougue music-swap software, as this is the most common place I see it among young net users.

There are some free on-line scanners that work from the websites. My favorite is "housecall" by Trend Micro. Got to this site and run the scanner - It is pretty good and finding and locating such junk programs. Link is housecall.trendmicro.com.

Also, go into "services" (Control Panel / Admin tools / Services) of your computer and disable "Messenger" service, as this is frequently used by spammers, and has no use outside of a corporate network.

For other preventive measures, you MUST have regularly updated anti-virus installed and running on your computer, or this junk will continue to re-install itself. While it may seem harmless (albeit annoying), some of these rougue programs might also include keystroke loggers that capture your keystrokes and send them in to the "bad guys" regularly. I hope you don't use this infected computer to do any on-line banking or have any other secrets on it. :(

Ooooooh, sounds like you got a nice, juicy virus in there. Start up in safe mode (F8) and run your spyware and virus programs. Get rid of them, then re-start in normal mode.
