You boneheads. It is not a comet. Do any of you know what a comet is? It is a ball of ice and rocks and dirt and dust. A cosmic snowball, as it were, that is hurtling through space in a very large elliptical orbit around the sun. As it gets closer to the sun, the radiation from the sun melts the comet somewhat, and it leaves a trail of ice and vapor and dust and dirt and rocks behind it. What YOU are seeing in the night sky is a fairly large meteorite streaking into our atmosphere from outer space at very high speed. When it hits the atmosphere, the friction causes it to burn up either partially or completely and leave a flaming trail behind it. The combination of a glowing meteorite and its flaming trail is called a meteor. Earth is being bombarded constantly by small pea-gravel size meteorites that burn up completely in the upper atmosphere, and when it's really dark and clear and there's no moon, you can see them streaking in if you're lucky. They're called falling or shooting stars. Every now and then, a bigger one comes in and glows bright orange and leaves a very dramatic flaming trail. Consider yourself lucky to see one. They don't happen very often and they only last a few seconds. I've seen maybe five in my 46 years.

It was most likely a meteor shower. Some meteors can be huge and take a long while to burn up in the atmosphere. And on rare occasions, they can hit the earth and make small creators. This happened one night down in Alabama, when a woman was awoken from her sleep by a huge bang that came from her back yard. She went outside and found a creator with the remains of a smokin' meteor inside. The press came from everywhere just to film it.

Yeah, it's called a "falling Star" or a small comet. Happens all the time.

could be a meteorite burning up in the atmosphere. it is actually more common than you would think.

though something like that is only golf ball size when it starts to burn, and never gets a chance to hit ground.
