A large body of air has mass and like any large mass it has lots of inertia and resists change. At ground level air is much more dense therefore has much more thermal inertia so it resists changes in temperature and serves as a insulator. At high altitudes the exact opposite happens and heat moves around relatively freely and therefore is lost more easily. Jules, lecturer, Australia.

You may already know about the relationship between temperature and pressure: When you pressurize air (or any gas), it gets hotter, and when you release the pressure on air it gets colder.
As air rises, the pressure decreases. It is this lower pressure at higher altitudes that causes the temperature to be colder on top of a mountain than at sea level.
