Im a registered Chickahominy... and my tribe (eastern virginia) has been speaking english since first contact with Europeans.

I hope this helps, although its different for each tribe. No one answer "one" will be right since there are thousands of tribes.

~ The Natives spoke a unique language strangely similar to English. It was a blend of ancient languages brought to the continent with the early migration. The unique language was called "Cku Souy". It was spoken as a common language, secondary to the seperate tribal languages. The European settlers addapted the language and brought it back to their home lands. In 1066 King William I established Cku Souy as the official language of The Brittish Empire, changing the name to "English".

The ancient language Cku Souy was forgotten over time as the English settlers claimed it as thier own, saying that they taught it to the "savages" in the new world.

During the British-American war, commonly known as the American Revolution, the natives could in fact speak the English (though they often chose to use their tribal tongues).

I got this information from a history book used in my HIS 364 class: Ancient Peoples of America. Hope it helped!
