I'm looking to get started with my own computer repair/consulting business. I have my A+ certification, but my hands on experience is limited. Should I just go for it, and see if I become successful?

You need 6 things:

1) Targeted leads... so you can focus your efforts on the most profitable small business clients

2) A good qualification process... so you don't waste time on wild goose chases

3) Command of the sales call process... so you know exactly what to say to turn FREE into FEE!

4) A well thought out way to start working with new customers... which I call a Proving Ground Project (tm)

5) A natural way to segue that Proving Ground Project (tm) into a larger remediation or upgrade for a more permanent solution

6) A long-term, mutually beneficial virtual IT support contract arrangement

For a Computer Repair and Consulting shop, you need to know about Software and Hardware. Many a times, many problems will be solved using software settings. so it is also very important to know the software details... i.e. you must know how to solve general problems that occur with operating systems. coming to the operating systems, its better to know all the generally used operating systems like windows xp, windows 9x, linux etc. as many operating systems you know, it will helpfull. because not all users use only windows xp or only linux.
Coming to the hardware, you have to decide which level of repairing section you want. chip level or not? if you are planning for a general level repair shop, you need to know how to assemble a computer and a little bit more and how to format a system and install operating systems and software. if you are planning for chip level repair shop, you need to know many things about electronix. if you want to start immediately, it will be better to depent on other chip level shops for your chip level problems. if they are minor, do it by your own. so.. you need to know hardware as well as software solutions to start a computer repair /consulting shop. as said in the previous answer, it will always helpfull to have some experience in computers. but we cannt say as 2 years or something else. other wise better do a course on hardware and software. it will teach you a lot of things.
