Not all people are like that - but many people are. There is no excuse for it - try and find yourself some real friends that are there for you and don't talk trash. They are hard to find, but I've found I'd rather have 1 true friend than 10 regular friends.

I think everyone has friends that do that, but if you are lucky to find one who won't, hold onto them.
Tell them you don't like to be friends with people who talk bad behind other peoples backs.
They should get the hint, if they don't, start searching for better friends.
