i can't watch most videos (like yahoo videos) on my macbookpro.?

how can get the program/video player i need to watch these online videos, trailers etc. for free? When i've tried to download windows media 9 it ends up as a file on my desktop, but then i don't know what to do with it. it says it needs a "default application" etc. does anyone know how to download a free program, step by step? please help me -i'm learning slowly.
