I currently live in Japan, but i will be moving back to California in 2 years. I want to buy a motorycycle while I am here. What must I do to either order an American bike here or get a Japanese motorcycle changed to US specs?

Just buy something there and sell it when you leave. Get one of the cool 400cc bikes since they don't have them here. It'll also be cheaper to get the license for anything less than 400cc. As far as importing a bike from the US, I don't know the details. But if you want to ship the bike back to the US afterwards, it's going to be hard to make it street legal. It'll work as a track bike, but if you want to ride it on the street, you'll have to have the bike taken apart and various parts shipped to different locations. Then get them all back, have a shop put it all back together and then register is as an off road bike. Then you hope you can get a green sticker slapped on it by the DMV and then you can try to register it for the street. Very difficult and time consuming process, plus the DMV has been tightening rules a lot on what can be made street legal. Do a search on gray market motorcycles and it should have better details on how to get rare stuff into the US market.

Two years? Dude, that is an eternity in "bike years" ... just go ahead and ride the local iron. Sell it when you leave (or give it to some street person as a tip).

Go to the dealer that you want to purchase motorcycle from and explain your dilemma about you moving back to good ole USA..
And they will more than likely assist you in the paper work also the crating of your cycle.
