This may not be the exact answer you are looking for, but it is worth your while to know that
circles, ellipses, the hyperbola and parabola can all be obtained by cutting a plane through a cone at varying orientations. They are known as "conical sections". Read into it on wiki or something for some quick interesting and useful info.

A quick google for "conical sections" yields many items of manufacturing using these shapes. Some nice things under the image tab too. For some reason #1 is a dog. I leave it for you to investigate the conical properties of the common dog.

The curve a power line makes between power poles is a parabola. By knowing the distance between the poles, the thickness, weight and strenget of the line the engineers can determine the "sag" of the wire and how high it should be hung to obtain a desires height above the groung>
