Can anyone learn to sing well?

Question

I am applying for an acting program and one of the audition requirements are to sing a capella. I have experiencing acting but I am a horrible singer. I can match low keys when much effort is put forth but cannot just pick-up and start singing randomly. I have a low voice to and cannot get high notes. Is it something innate to biology or something to be learned with practice? Lastly, to anyone with theatre experience: how big of a role doea singing play for a future actor? Is it that necessary?

Well, first off, as a very experienced singer and actress, i can tell you that if you're going for roles on broadway, a large majority of them are singing. However, musicals, unlike opera, do not always require a great singing talent. If you can stay on key and learn music quickly you should be fine (in fact, character voices are rarely that great). As for advice on singing, try singing scales (do you have a keyboard or piano handy?), this will not only help to excercise your voice and imprint notes into your memory, but it will also most likely increase your range. But don't worry, if you don't have a huge range it's not really a huge deal. If you are REALLY serious about improving your singing skills, I suggest getting a vocal coach, they work wonders! Check out Aaron Anastasi's singing video lessons here: http://www.voicevideolessons.com The videos are very easy to follow and to my surprise extremely helpful even for advanced singers. For beginners I would have to say this is a gold mine. I was able to improve my singing, voice tone and range in just under two weeks and I am an advanced musician, been doing this for the last 13 years.

I live in New York City, I wanted to go to a singing teacher but that would have cost me over $1400 per month. Good thing with this internet, $1400 it's a lot of money for me.

I had a voice teacher who once told me that any one could sing if they found a style that worked for them. She used Macy Gray as an example, and I like her, I think she sings with real soul. As far as your acting career goes, what ever extra abilities you possess are perks. Most acting resumes list talents. It comes in handy if a character you are up for have some of the same talents. Of course if you wanted to land the part of the leading mad in a musical comedy you might have some difficulty, however with Method Acting being the big thing for the last 30 years or so, as long as you possess a great acting ability you don;t have a problem. Some actors who can't sing still land parts that they are supposed to sing in, and voice overs come in to play. On a side note I just saw this film on the power of attraction and how it is the key to the universe. Want it to happen, don;t be negative at all, feel it be it, put all your positive energy in to it. You will create it. You could even create the possibility that you have an amazing voice you were too afraid to use with the help of a voice coach.

Singing teachers will cost money and can be expensive so they're not for everyone. Singing can be learned so it's not an "either you have it or you don't" kind of thing.

Singing is definitely helpful in getting cast, especially because there are a lot of musicals produced.

Talent Agents and Casting Directors like to see singing and dancing on a resume. It makes you more likely to get an agent and cast in productions.

As you are applying for an acting program, hopefully, you will get good vocal training.
