I applied for employment for this company and I am being asked to email my resume. I would like to know what would be best. Do I send my cover letter as an attachment along with my resume or do I send the cover letter on the initial email page (for example, when you click on compse and than you start writting)?

Thank You

I suggest that you include your cover letter in the body of the email, AND attach it to the email as a document - this way if they need to print it out, they can print the attached cover letter which will retain the formatting, and not look messy as e-mails often do, with excess header info, etc.

As well, be sure to include in your first sentence that you are sending resume in response to a request for it; for example:

Dear Name (or Department head)

As per your request, I am sending you my resume in consideration for (put job title here). As you will see on my resume, attached, I have __ years of experience in a directly relevant field ... etc.

Best of luck to you!

When I send my resume and letter, I type a short note in the body of the email, then attach a word document that has my cover letter on the first page, then my resume on the second page. This shows that you can be personable in the email and still professional in the attached word document. Good luck in your job search!

I normally send the cover letter within in the body of the email, and the resume as an attachment. In days of online security threats I think it's good to minimize the number of attachments.

Either is an acceptable practice. Typically, most people emailing their resumes will make the email body the cover letter with the resume as an attachment.

I'd also say cover letter on the initial page, that should give them enough information to see if they want to even bother opening the attachment or not, so be sure to spend time making a stellar cover letter.
