The way I see it is we come here to earth to learn something - and we do it over and over again, each time learning something new. You could almost think of each life as a different course or even a video game.
In all of our lives, the one constant is us - our higher selves, our core personality - and when something happens in one lifetime that is too hard to deal with or to understand it can become a recurring theme in our subsequent lives.
I have heard a psychic tell a man that his prosperity block was because he had taken a vow of poverty as a priest in a past life and that was still with him and he would have to take conscious steps to clear that before he would see success in that area.
I think in extreme situations - like the young woman who was shot through the heart - the theme could be so strong as to be a birthmark, although so many children are born with what they call a "stork bite" on their head and neck that I don't know that all birthmarks have to do with past lives.

There are specific religious guidelines for some of the philosophical amount of reincarnation. Monks in Tibet, for example, believe that the Dali Llama, the child, is indeed a reincarnated spirit of a former religious person in their beliefs, and the child is supposed to be able to recall portions of past lives as he becomes older and has studied enough.
The general term "past lives" has to do with glimpses that people supposedly get that hint toward living in a different period of time, with different experiences. Not exactly Hinduism, it is unique in it's own way.
Just don't believe everything you see on TV :)

The answers to all of your questions happen to be in a fantastic book by Ian Lawton called The Book Of The Soul. I've read it and it goes into great detail about past lives, reincarnation and the research done in this field. Birth marks from past lives is mentioned too....
The link below may help you make up your own mind...

I've heard about past lives as well, although I don't believe in it. An Amerian woman went to Italy once and found herself very familiar with the streets there, and she believed that she had been an Italian in her past life. But that's her story, and I can't tell if it's true or not. Maybe other people can help you with this.

I don't believe in reincarnation. You have always had the same spirit. However, before we were born to this physical earth, I believe that we lived in a pre-mortal realm with our families and friends. We were extremely interested in life here on earth, and it is not outside the realm of imagination to say that we watched movies about history or were permitted to visit parts of earth on "field trips" - I guess that is the best way to say it - to see what earth life would be like. All of these memories that people are having are either vicarious memories of seeing what their past ancestors went through, or they are partial glimpses of what they might have experienced while preparing to come to this earth. This life on earth is a small mortal stage, and I would avoid the people who tell you things that lead you away from faith in Jesus Christ. He also had a pre-mortal life and was prepared very carefully to be the Savior and Redeemer of the World, but He did not have alternative identities. Hope this helps.

I belive in rebirth, and therefore past life. I am Budhist according to Buddhism, birth will repeat till a person is totally free of sin, and achieves a state of nirvana. Till then you are born again and again to pay for all the sins you have committed or continue to commit; karama.
This explains why some people are born deformed, poor, unhappy etc. while some other seem to have everything at their feet. A person who is born to a life of suffering or is introduced to suffering later on is repaying for something they committed in their past life. i.e. If you killed someone last birth, you too will prolly die an unnatural, painful death this life or a life to come later...
I hope that makes sense.

Well The HINDU philosophy is that the souls take different lives sand different form of lives even. Many children have said that they were born in previous birth in such and such village and when taken by the parents of this life to that village they identify their house, school mates, their previous birth father mother brothers etc and even s[peak that language.Day in and day out we see several such cases.
But there is nothing to get worried about it. By knowing more about past life I understand that your love anf hate for some persons, fear of water, or fire etc can all be traced to previous life and get cfured even GOK

It's philosophical, not real. Kind of like virtual reality. If reincarnation is true, then we have all had past lives. There is no "proof" but there are weird experiences that make us think it's feasible.
Birthmarks aren't anything more than birthmarks and there's no proof they are something different.

I believe "past lives" are a possibility. I suffered from severe headaches for many, many years. Plus, a fear of being underwater. I think I may have worked on a riverboat over 100 years ago, and was hit over the head and thrown overboard to drown. Hence, the headaches and fear.

There's a book that tells you where you should go on your vacation. It's called your checkbook.
Knowledge is proud she knows so much; wisdom is humble that she knows no more. (Cowper)
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you did not do than by the ones you did. (Mark Twain)
You can't expect people to look eye to eye with you if you are looking down on them.
We can't always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future. (Franklin D. Roosevelt)
Be not simply good; be good for something. (Henry David Thoreau)
