ever go to the beach for the first time in months and forget your sunscreen? it can happen to tender bark too. overexposure to sunlight can damage the bark on young trees. sunburn damage will kill bark. the damaged bark will split or peel off. the tissue below maybe invaded by disease-causing organisms. newly planted or heavily pruned trees need protection from the sun. a water-based interior white latex paint, diluted by half water is the standard. burlap is wrapped to protect from wind burn as well. coming soon, Coppertone #15 for citrus.

Right on folks-- the old folks painted the trees with white wash-- cheaper then, I have no idea now. The third reason I know of is to make the tree more visible when light is low-- so you might see one painted that is next to a driveway or a street.

You paint a tree trunk white to keep pests from infesting it.
