When your programs start running low or you just want to "clean" and start over with a clean version of windows, you will format your computer.
OK. In order to do so, you will need your copy of windows or your set of recovery discs (in case you bought a computer that already had programs installed in them.) keep in mind that you will lose everything you had installed and saved in your PC. BACK UP before you format.
There are two ways to format your PC;
1) use your recovery discs as promted by your pc. (That is in case you were given those)
2)go to: start>all programs> accesories>command promt> type "Format c:
it will format your PC.
Dont forget to Back up all important information before you procceed to do anything.
After the format proccess just insert your Windows install disc and let it do its job.

You will need to get ahold of a boot disk (either floppy disk or cd). Then while starting up the system, put the boot disk in and it will take you to MSDOS. There type in "fdisk" and it should give you a list of options to choose from.
However, I do not recommend you format your harddrive unless you really want to wipe out the information. This method is a very brutal way of cleaning up a hard drive and commonly used wrongly just to reinstall windows.

You can reformat your HDD, not a computer.
Note that all your data will be lost!
For any HDD or HDD partition issue console command:
format X: /u
where X is a name of HDD, e.g., D, E, F, etc.
BTW, if you want to erase everything why not to install your OS from scratch? Setup will format your HDD for you.

Why??? That is the last resort when all else has failed and you really have to go back and start over. Or if you wanted to change the OS from one type to another. Better idea is to fix the problem rather then start over.

I wouldn't I would leave it to a pro. You can defragment your hard drive by using the tool from the start menu.
