If you'd ask a person from Africa to celebrate Kwanzaa they would look at you like you were crazy. They have no clue what Kwanzaa is, because it was a holiday that was just conjured up in the 70's or 80's I can't remember off hand.

Kwaanza is a manufactured December holiday made up by African Americans to sort-of, kind-of, compete with Christmas and Hannakuh. The purpose appears to be to teach the young the supremacy of the COMMUNITY as a "cultural norm" and moiety. Maybe.
"Kwaanza is an African-American celebration initiated by Dr. Karenga as both a way to celebrate the new year and a reminder of the history of black communities in the United States. It is patterned on the African celebration of harvest during which tribute is paid to the ancestors and to God while at the same time praying for another benevolent year. The celebration has also become an opportunity for most African-American communities to teach younger generations about African culture, rituals and language. Kiswahili is the privileged language for the seven-day festivities." -- http://oncampus.richmond.edu/~kkasongo/Kwaanza.htm
