when the original designer of undergarments, specifically male underwear, tried several options, including the kind most women use without the "flaps", he found that most men, because of the variety in length and width of protrusions, restricted movement and made the wearer uncomfortable. By averaging between 2 sizes (example 32-34) it gave men within these waist sizes more flexibility in the area that matter the most. Generally, people think it was there for an opening when it came time for relief, which is false, and in actuality allowed pulling and stretching for those with more girth the room to fit without being "squeezed" or pressured. Boxers, as they are now referred, were some of the originals used to help "protect" the male member from the rough fabrics of early years and as cotton was more widely used, the design and use of "flaps" became the most popular

The slit is there so that when you have to urinate, you can take out your penis and pee without having to pull down your underwear. It is really quite convenient and discreet.

The flaps overlap so that there is no chance of accidentally showing your private parts when just wearing your underwear. It protects your penis from getting loose near your zipper or other hazardous things (or even drafts!).

In fact, all men's underwear have slitted opening in front with flaps. They are such a functional part of men's underwear that they are absolutely necessary.

For the same reason there is an opening on boxers, I'm guessing. Since the tighty whiteys are tight, I would think the risk of "falling out" might be greater???

Uh, to allow the act of urination without too much difficulty or pants removal. The flaps are to keep everything where it is supposed to be without any possibility of escape. Very grabable too. Good luck on this quest!!

I don't have a clue. I thought all men knew and they just didn't want to tell us. I always wondered that. Good question. Is it maybe because some men are too lazy to pull their underwear down to take a p?

Well, it came in handy when I was smuggling drugs into the CCF at Frontera for my woman in the late 80's. Oh yeah, she was doing 25 to life for a double murder. Don't tweak!

So you can take a leak without unbuttoning your pants and opening your belt, and it has flaps so your thang doesn't fall out.
