Tough question....
I don't think there is any one right or wrong answer, I know there isn't.
A strong relationship is built by the people involved, what works for them. But one piece of advice I could give you is take your time getting to know someone before becoming involved and make sure you and they are both secure enough, mature enough and old enough to be responsible to the relationship and to themselves. That takes a lot of guts, honesty and integrity, it is not nearly as easy as the words suggest.
In any relationship there is a complete muddled mix of weak and strong, happy and sad, mad and glad, and it takes everyone of them to create a relationship, so don't kid yourself by thinking a strong relationship is all "pretty n pink", or some garden of flowers smiling all pretty, filling the air with sweet perfume. That kind of relationship is what fictional romance novels are all about.
I think a strong relationship is one that is built on mutual respect, trust and honesty that is built upon the foundation of compassion and understanding. Everything else is just the building blocks, and in every single structure ever built there are a few weak blocks: they simply remain as the surrounding ones carry them along. With a good foundation it( they) will last a lifetime.
Best wishes and good hunting. When you find a "real answer", please let me know.... Hell, let us all know :)

for you to have a strong relationship with your partner you should trust one another. trust is the main foundation of a relationship, without it your relationship will fall apart.

be mature about it. confront your man for goodness sakes! confront him if you're feeling weird about it. im in the same position. i feel one way but then act another way when im in front of him and i dont really want to say it to him b/c then it'll just be awkward but yeah im workin on it too. just confront thats all.
