The problem is that religions and governments use the same terms. To a Catholic, which I was raised, my wife and I are not married. We were joined in a 'civil union' by a notary. There was no religion involved, yet, no one is clamoring for me to renounce my marriage as being false.

'Marriage' is really a religious institution which each religion is entitled to regulate, but, for the purpose of establishing a legal household, marriage is also a civil institution. The fact that both religious and civil marriages have walked hand in hand for so long is where the issue lies.

If gays would concede the term 'marriage' to religion and settle for 'union', that would take a lot of the steam out of the opposition's argument.

Personally, I don't give a damn one way or the other.

Oh, and Amber, the group sex thing, they're called Mormons.

MARRIAGE - A contract made in due form of law, by which a free man and a free woman reciprocally engage to live with each other during their joint lives, in the union which ought io exist between husband and wife. By the terms freeman and freewoman in this definition are meant, not only that they are free and not slaves, but also that they are clear of all bars to a lawful marriage.
*******************************************

I think it should NOT be legal. If they want to live together - doesn't borther me none, but marriage - is a union between MAN and WOMAN, not between MAN and MAN or WOMAN and WOMAN.

I would feel really weird, if I would file some papers and in field "Spouse" there will be a question "Sex of spouse - Male/Female?". hey, how about - I will feel offended?

This is just wrong. Plus, do not look at that as of "just marriage" thing. Legal marriage will mean joint tax returns, etc.

How about we will let people, who love group sex, get married? Maybe they love each other and want to be all together forever?

Actually, I think everyone should limit the use of the term marriage to just religious rituals. If people want state benefits, get a civil union. Straight, gay, whatever. If people want to get married, then that's up to their individual religion.

But, you say, marriage is used as a civil legal term everywhere. What do we do about that? Ok then. That means it is not a religious issue. And nothing in the laws ceases to work because of the genders involved.

Wives don't have different legal benefits and obligations than husbands. Why? Because the gender of the spouse doesn't matter as far as the law is concerned. If so, then gender really shouldn't matter as far as the law is concerned.

Every single argument against gay marriage boils down to one of two things. Either "my religion doesn't approve" or "I personally don't approve". That's it. I have never seen a single valid legal non-religious arguments against same-sex marriage.

It's certainly not about procreation. If it were, then only couples who could have children should be allowed to get married. Nobody who was infertile. Nobody past child-bearing age. And nobody who chooses not to have kids (or chooses not to have sex at all). If marriage is only about procreation, then change the laws to reflect that. But it's not about that.

Until 40 years ago, many states made it illegal to marry someone of a different race. Nowadays, nobody is proposing a constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between two people of the same race.

Aside from religious grounds, the only reasons to prohibit same-sex marriage are pure bigotry and prejudice and hatred of what's different. And under our Constitution, religious grounds are never a valid reason to enact civil law.

So, those who are opposed to same-sex marriage -- put your votes where your mouth is. Try to get laws passed limiting marriage only to those couples who are going to bear children naturally. Or admit that's not a valid excuse. Try to get laws passed that acknowledge their justification as being on religious grounds. Or admit that's not a valid justification. Try to get laws passed that grant different marital rights and obligations to wives versus husbands. Or admit that gender doesn't make a difference in terms of spousal rights.

Be consistent. Or admit you are being hypocritical and prejudiced. But for gods sake, and for ours, think about what you are trying to accomplish and why. And ask yourself if those are really valid reasons do deny the benefits of state-sanctioned monogamy to two people your probably won't ever meet.

I have no opinion about gay marriage. It has nothing to do with me if gays marry or not.

My opinion doesn't matter. There is no such thing as "gay marriage." Marriage is a man marrying a woman.

Gay people are still going to kiss and whatever else they do (I don't want to see it in public though even if they were gay or not). What difference if they have a ring on their finger? I think that the congress are homophobics.

What difference does it make if gays live together or are married? If they want to commit to each other, why not? They should be allowed to have the same benefits as any other married couple.

I have no problem with it. I can't understand why some vocal minority says it threatens heterosexual marriage when 50% of all marriages end in divorce anyway.

I don't see anything wrong with it cause it to will probably end in divorce along with all the other marriages.
