This is what it says on the apple website.
Make sure your computer meets the system requirements for your model iPod. Connecting your iPod to a PC that has older iPod software on it can cause this symptom.
Macintosh users who do not have Mac OS X 10.3.4 or later can use the iPod Dock Connector to FireWire cable to connect to a FireWire compatible iPod to a FireWire-equipped Mac. With Mac OS X 10.3.4 or later, you can use the iPod Dock Connector to USB 2.0 Cable to connect a supported iPod to a high-powered USB 2.0 port.
Put your iPod into disk mode and connect it to your computer.
If you can see iPod on the desktop, in My Computer, or in iTunes, you're ready to restore it. You should attempt to restore the iPod even if it won't go into disk mode.
Warning: Restoring iPod erases and reformats the hard disk. All music and other data on iPod will be erased. Make a backup of any files or music on iPod before restoring it.
If you can't put your iPod into disk mode, reset it, then read the related documents to see if they might solve your issue. If not, consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod or visit your local Apple Retail Store

Did you check the troubleshooting section of your instructions manual? If you don't have one, see if you can download the PDF off Apple's website.
