3. Suppose that you work with 2 cell cultures, X and Y. Culture X has a growth constant of 0.0125 day -1(exponent ni siya sa day) and a present population of 1200. Culture Y has a decay constant of magnitude 0.180 day -1(exponent ni siya) and a population of 1600.

a. Plot a graph of the populations of both cultures over the next days.

b. From your graph, estimate when the populations will be equal.

Number of cells on the first and subsequent days:

Culture X
-----------
Start . = 1200
After 1 day 1200x 1.0125 exp1 =1215
2 days 1200x 1.0125 exp2 =1230
3 days 1200x 1.0125 exp3 =1245
and similarly for subsequent days

Culture Y
-------------
Note that here we have a decay constant so we have to divide the values

Start = 1600
After 1 day 1600/ 1.18 exp1 =1356
2 days 1600/ 1.18 exp 2 =1149
3 days 1600/ 1.18 exp3 =974
and similarly for subsequent days.

If you plot these two sets of results on the same graph, putting the day on the horizontal axis and the daily counts on the vertical axis, the point of intersection is where they are equal.

A brief look at these results will show you that the answer will be "After about 1.5 days" (the exact result is 1.62 days)
