This depends on what you want to do with the system.
For gaming, movies, pictures, or music, go with Windows Media Center. These computers are also equiped with hardware that most other computers don't have (e.g. a Tv tuner). However, the cost may be slightly more.
For advanced users and those demanding higher customization in their operating system, Windows XP Pro is good. Though in my opinion, you'd never end up using much of the features more than once if any. Though sometimes dell includes XP pro free of cost, otherwise, i'd say it isnt that useful.
Finally, for basic home users who work on their school assignments, office papers, light gaming, watch a movie or two here and there, surf the web, etc, home edition is a good operating system to use.

Windows Vista is coiming out in 6 months, and XP will be old news. XP been here for something like 7 years. Don't buy a laptop for the opearting system, but rather for what's under the hood.
I would get a computer based on what you need it to do, plus a little more. Great memory, video and sound cards, hd space, etc. could be better on a small name company than a big name one like Dell.

Unless you plan on intergrating your laptop into a home entertainment system, then you're wasting your money with MCE.
XP Home is perfect for everday use, and Professional works just as well, especially if you plan on connecting to larger networks, such as schools.
Considering you're asking this question, I'm assuming you're not a heavy computer user and won't be using this laptop for things such as hi-def gaming or audio or graphic editing. Definitely buy the most you can with your money, but don't beleive that you need massive power if all you're going to be doing is basic internet/word processing/light gaming.
Anything above a 1.5Ghz processor and 512MB of ram will do you fine.
And as suggested before, don't limit yourself to Dell either. You could be missing out on better deals and better software bundles.
IMHO, Vista is a tad overrated and requires far too much power for what relatively little it does. And considering the date of release keeps getting pushed back farther and farther, It's just not that wise to wait. By the time Vista has enough market penetration, it'd be time to upgrade the notebook you buy today anyway.

you need to ensure why HP is $one hundred extra. Did you examine the photo card, the quantity of memory ram, the equipment bus processor, etc. if those issues are extra effectual than the Dell, then it properly worth to pay the extra money. If each and each and every of the specs are a similar then it might want to avert those extra $ and get the Dell.

DELL sucks. It's a cheap product and i don't mean affordable. Shop online at wal-mart. You will find an HP at a very good price. 17"screen fast enough for a laptop for about $600
and they do layaway

That's not important really. Just get the laptop with the highest specs.
Make sure not to get a laptop that runs hot. Their fans kick on when you even access a website and it becomes a bother to the user.

rather than shop by brand name, why not figure out what features you're looking for (screen size, battery life, etc) and then comparison shop?
