I've known it to be used in two ways... one, yes, the sad sigh with the whole head bending over, eyes closed, as in resignation to an unwelcome thought.

The other is in shock. Normally, I would think of this as "my chin hit the floor" but I have seen it used that way.

I think the first onefits the passage you quoted, however.

It means you remember a time in the past where your chin made somewhat forceful contact with the external portion of the chest area.

It could mean that you remembered going to sleep. Where your head drops and results in your chin making contact with your chest.

sounds like his jaw dropped so far that his chin hit his chest at his surprise of the donation going backward .
(think of a cartoon where the jaw drops to the ground from surprise).
