If the other suggestions do not work, I am pretty sure that you have a virus. I got a similar (if not the same) one before from Limewire. To open Task Manager: simply copy (do NOT cut) and paste the taskmgr.exe program (in XP the path is C:\ WINDOWS\ system32\ taskmgr.exe without spaces) to a different location (such as your desktop or C:\ drive). You should then be able to open the task manager that you pasted.
If I remember correctly, and you do have a similar or identical virus, this virus will have two running processes; one that is obviously using much of your computer’s resources, and another that will restart this process a few seconds after you stop it. Unfortunately, I am very sorry to say I don’t remember what the processes are called, but the first one is obvious because it was taking almost all of the computer’s resources and I was eventually able to identify the second because it became slightly active every time the first one was restarted.
Once you have both processes canceled: SCAN, SCAN, SCAN!!! With your current virus protection software, Trend Micro HouseCall (free online virus scanner, http://housecall.trendmicro.com ), and Ad-Aware (free, http://lavasoft.com ), but not all at the same time. Scan repeatedly until ALL scan results come up with nothing. As I recall, this virus creates a few folders in random places; although I think HouseCall fixed all the files in them to be harmless, you should delete any folder you are SURE wasn’t there before. And of course, track down whatever file caused this and delete it immediately.
I hope that this isn’t your problem and I typed all this for nothing--a virus is never good to have; but if you do have a virus, and you follow these steps soon, your computer should be fine.
Then again, maybe one of your keys isn’t functioning. ; )

The power button option sounds reasonable. Yes, even the almighty XP crashes hard like that from time to time. It sounds though that either you have some spyware that's blocking your computer functionality, or the program you are trying to close (if you ran it deliberately) may be too needy for your system... if this is the case, check your system requirements. Most programs that ask for a 1.8 GHz PC will run on a 1.0 GHz PC, without telling you otherwise, but your system's stability is NOT guaranteed when you run programs like this.

Have you checked to see if your buttons actually work correctly? Maybe a button is not functioning.
