It depends what kind of music you want to play. Consider the following quote: "The evidence of who you are as a guitarist is most evident when you play acoustic." Keith Richards, of all people, said that. Most people seem to write on acoustic and take it from there. Myself, I like both equally. I'd have to say that anyone who seriously considered themselves a guitar player would have to agree. With an electric guitar, it's easy to hide behind a lot of distortion and effects and make a sort of noise. With an acoustic, it's 100% pure. Being able to be as adept at both in your music is the challenge. Look at Neil Young, for example. Listen to his "Rust Never Sleeps" album and you'll see what I mean.

electric is easier to learn to play, and you can do much more with an electric, like distortion, use pedals, plus how many rock bands actually use an acoustic besides days of the new

it completely depends on what sound you're going for, and if you want to be able to play unplugged as well.
you could just get an acoustic/electric and save yourself the trouble of choosing...

Depends on the music you will be playing. Electric is good for rock music and acoustic is good for the more relaxed type of music such as country or christian.
