You want a healthy baby. You know the effects of smoking on your unborn baby. You smoke anyway. Does not compute.

Smoking doubles the risk of having a low birthweight. Low birthweight can result from poor growth before birth and preterm delivery. Premature and low-birthweight babies face an increased risk of serious health problems during the newborn period, chronic lifelong disabilities (such as cerebral palsy, mental retardation and learning problems) and even death.

Smoking cigarettes appears to double a woman’s risk of developing placental problems. These include placenta previa (low-lying placenta that covers part or all of the opening of the uterus) and placental abruption (in which the placenta peels away, partially or almost completely, from the uterine wall before delivery). Both can result in heavy bleeding during delivery that can endanger mother and baby.

So which one do you love more -- your cigarettes or your baby?

If you are 5 months and havnt quit smoking you have already affected the chance of having a healthy baby. You need to quit now to improve the chance that he will be born with out any further damage. The baby is more active in the following months. You should prepare yourself now for a life of asthma attacks, running to the ER in the middle of the night because he cant breathe and chronic pneumonia and upper respiratory infections. Im not judging you, I was a smoker for 11 years before I got pregnant. It was the first thing that made me sick and I quit the day I found out. But I do know people who didnt quit. One was a co-worker, she was constantly having to take days off of work because her son was in the ER with asthma. Or he would wake up in the middle of the night because he couldnt breathe and had to endure hours of breathing treatments. At 5 months the lungs are developing and this is a critical time. I hope you have a good insurance, or you should start saving now because you will constantly be in the dr's office. When he is born, he will be on extra oxygen and probably have a low birth weight.

Do all you can to quit now, you could still lose your baby or have a still born if you dont quit. Talk to your OB about quitting. It is very important that you do. Smoking through your pregnancy is a selfish choice, no offense. But think about it this way. You spend $3 a pack and in the years to come you will have to spend hundreds of thousands in medical expenses for your child who didnt have a choice. If you smoke after the birth of your child, do so outside and change your clothes. Dont breastfeed if you will be smoking.

My sister has gone through 3 healthy pregnancies, with three healthy baby boys, and smoked a pack a day. Although she smoked, she did take the best care she could in all other aspects. She never mentioned the baby not moving much, and it's too late to call or I would, but I would bet that you are fine. If your OB knows that you smoke, and hasn't really said anything, then everything is probably fine. Congratulations on the boy!!! Good Luck!!

Although you should stop smoking, I do not believe this to be the reason your baby has "lazy days". I did not smoke at all with my pregnancies and my babies did the same thing. I actually went to the ER a time or two and the Dr.'s always assured me nothing was wrong. Babies have very active days and not so active days. Think about it, some days you don't feel as fabulous as the next-we just don't notice it as much because we have stuff to do!! If you could just rest when you wanted to and had nothing else much to do, you would!! So, the baby is just chillin..but smoking is not good for either of you, so I recommend you stop. Be sure you voice any concerns with your doctor, that's what you pay them for! Take care and good luck!!

I think you should talk to your doctor. Because, I believe you should be able to feel your baby move so many times even per hour. My kids are grown now. I know the last month my sister didn't feel her baby move much and the baby ended up being still born. Please talk to your doctor more detailed about it. If you feel he or she isn't moving as much. Ask your doctor about stress tests and make sure that the doctor is checking you the last 4 weeks of your pregnancy. The stress tests are usually done at the hospital and they put the fetal monitor on your stomach. I don't say anything for you to get scared only for you to go in asap and talk to your doctor. Good Luck! ps I never smoked or drank and my daughter is handicapped so, I don't appreciate seeing someone saying that's from smoking.ps again. I NEVER SMOKED AND BOTH MY KIDS HAVE ASTHMA. THEY'RE GRANDMA, AUNTS, AND COUSINS HAVE IT. IT WAS INHERITED.

It's clear that you do not know much... At 5 months it is normal (by normal i mean a healthy pregnancy of someone who does NOT smoke) to feel the baby move off and on (meaning not continuously) ... You are going to regret smoking with that child in one way or another. Your baby could be born with many complications deriving from your nasty habit. You need to attend some parenting classes before your baby gets here. Another thing.. hasn't your doctor advised against you smoking and made you aware of the risks and complications???

If you want a healthy baby boy, STOP SMOKING. That's the only logical option you have.

It may be an addiction, but what's more important - you or your baby? If you truly love your baby you'll be able to stop until he's born. You're the one slowly killing him by continuing to smoke. Obviously the only logical conclusion is to stop smoking until you have the baby.

Nothing good comes of smoking, drinking or using drugs while you're pregnant, and I hate people like you who continue to risk an innocent child's life because of your own greed. He isn't asking for the toxic chemicals to come into him.. he can't walk away from it. Think about your actions and stop being so selfish.

actually i would try to cut down on smoking all you can ...there is many girls and women that have normal pregnancy's though and do smoke...but they say anymore smoking is really hard and could cause problems...but it is better to smoke i think than be nervous and eat all the time...the main thing you need to do is try not to worry..everything will most likely be fine..doctors can tell more now adays...i think you should not drink at all and of course do not do any drugs..make sure you take the prenatal vitamins and eat healthy..the baby will probably get more active as you progress in your pregnancy.....before long you will be able to see your baby move so plainly...and feel them without a doubt.. calm down and do not worry unnecessarily...that is the best thing you can do right now////

You could not really be concerned about a healthy baby or a baby that can move. If you were even remotely concerned you would not be smoking. Grow up being a parent is about 24/7 sacrifice and your needs to start now!!!!!

Smoking by pregnant women limits the amount of nutrients and oxygen that reach the unborn child. Effects of smoking while pregnant may include miscarriages, still births, low infant birth weight, and sudden infant death syndrome. Children born to smoking mothers may also suffer more colds and other lung problems, and may have learning difficulties, and behavioral problems.

You need to stop smoking ASAP. Get on the patch if you need to. Chew gum, whatever, just don't smoke. Only your doctor can determine whether your baby is healthy.
