It is the largest film festival in the world, held every year in the South of France. Cannes is in southern France on the Mediterranean Sea, and it sponsors the yearly event in which actors, directors, and movie critics come to compete for the "Palme d'or" or "Golden Palm", which is an award similar to the "Oscar".

See link below for the official site of the "Festival de Cannes" (English version).

It's a film festival in the south of France (in Cannes). It's where a bunch of *******, dikes and whiny liberals (I am a staunch hard line moderate, so I hate wacko conservative too) get together to tout extremely overrated crappy movies that no one will ever watch.

It's a low budget film festival. Nothing all that special. It's a big deal for unheard of film makers. A lot of movies from the festival get remade into actuall hollywood movies you can see in theatres.
