Everyone has their own ideas on when to start feeding their baby cereal. Most young mothers go by what the Dr says or what they read in a baby book. I did the same thing with my first child, but by the time I had my third child, my thinking had changed. He stayed hungry all the time, so I started him on cereal when he was three days old. Guess what, he's still alive and 32 years old. I didn't do any harm to him by feeding him at an early age. Just do what you think is best and whatever you decide to do, be careful you don't harm the child. You'll know what to do for him/her.

Good Luck!

i fed my baby cereal at 2 months. I personally thought the oatmeal was better for him, when he took the rice he was constipated. But I hear alot of mother likes the rice. I think you should try both to see. try one each week. But yea, I starting feeding at 2 months. He loves it! later on mix the cereal with some fruits from stage 1. you'll see a difference right away. He'll gobble it down so fast

I have gave my son who is now 3 months old rice cereal since he was a month old. I mixed it up real thin. And he loved it. As far as what the doctors recommend they go by what the AAP says. And as far as the American Pediatrac Association they contratdict theirselves in saying to with hold soilds until a baby is 6 months old. I looked at there website and read a lot of the articles. They just guess on what they feel is right. You are the mother go by what your gut tells you to do.

I didn't start my daughter on rice cereal untill she was a little over 4 months old and her doc told me that she usually doesn't recommend giving babies any soild food untill they are at least 5 months old unless you think your baby is ready...She also told me that it is best to start out with plain rice cereal and see how your baby reacts before trying other foods.

a 2 month old baby is not ready for solid food yet, they only need milk. if you fill them up with infant cereal, they will not get all the nutrients they need from milk. you should wait until the baby is at least 6 months old before you start giving them on solids. when they are 6 months old, you start giving them rice cereal, then oatmeal, and gradually one at a time start giving them veggies and then fruits.

Neither one. Babies younger than 6 months can't digest *anything* other than human milk. Formula is the fourth best and *only* acceptable food for the first 6 months if you don't nurse, pump, or give banked human milk, according to the World Health Organization.

Not only can't babies digest other foods, giving them increases the baby's chance of allergies and asthma (both sometimes life-threatening conditions) throughout her/his life.

Giving cereal to a baby *probably* won't kill or permanently harm her/him, but why risk it?!

Why would you need to start your baby on cereal so young? It's an old wise tail to start feeding cereal at this age! It can be more harmful than good. You should always consult your baby's health care provider before starting cereal at this age.

My children's healthcare providers and nutrionists, have always said start them on cereal between 4-6 months. You will know when your child is ready when he can hold his head up without bobbing it, and no longer has that reflexive tongue motion that pushes the cereal out of his mouth. They have also said to try rice first. The second cereal to start is oatmeal after rice is well tolerated. It causes the less amount of allergies, so you chances of running into that problem are slim.

My son couldn't handle Barely until he was 29 week old . It is the richest of all baby cereals. If he is screaming from Barely after you try it, it mean his tummy isn't ready or capable of digesting it. So please stop! My son has alway had a very sensitive stomach. So sensitive he couldn't handle formula -not even soy, just breast milk. I learned that if he gets a very bad stomach ache, his body is not ready for that particular food yet.

I would wait until 4 months of age then try rice, and if he starts screaming, hold off a couple of weeks to allow him more time to mature his digestive system. If still screaming, wait another week or two. Sometimes rice can be constipating, if this occurs try oatmeal baby cereal. Eating solids isn't important in their nutrional intake until they are about a year old. All they really need for nutrition is just their formula or breast milk for the first year. Solids are introduced at around four months only to teach them how to eat a solid, and accept new tastes and textures -not to give them nutrition. So don't sweat it because babies tummies aren't developed enough can't handle eating solids comfortably yet. Most babies are able to start tolerating solids by 6 months at the latest. So as long as he starts at six months (otherwise, they might develop a choking problem from having waited past 6 months to start solids) don't sweat it just yet.

The order to introduce food is cereals (some people/myself included had to skip the Barely for awhile and go to jar baby food). About six months of age you can start jarred baby food if he is tolerated cereal. It is usually recommended to start veggies first, and to wait 5-7 days before starting a new one in case there is an allergy, and then you'll know which food caused. After a couple of weeks you can try juices and fruits. You can only give your baby either prepackaged baby juices such as Gerber (because they are prediluted), or 100% juice that is watered down to a ratio of 50% juice and 50% water. At about 8 months, if baby is doing well you can try meats.

I hope I have been helpful.

I forgot to mention it is recommended to only give formula or breast milk in a bottle -to use a sippie cup for juice and water (when he is older and ready for juice and water ) to make bottle breaking easier later on. Don't mix cereal with the milk in a bottle unless directed by the baby's doctor. It is also recommended to use single ingredient foods when first starting on baby food (for example, don't use mixed cereal or combination baby foods) until you have done th 5-7 wait period on each individual food in the combination, when possible. (Like don't give apple/bannana until he's been tried on apples for a week, then bannanas). Mild table foods can be started about age 1.
