It's propaganda to put younger consumers off the idea, and make them associate smoking with bad cruel men! If they had any consideration for smokers, they wouldn't show it at all.
It appeals to people's vanity & snobbery to make them think
"If I want to be well-thought of, I can't smoke."
"Only male bums and thugs smoke". It works, too.
It used to work the other way - if you saw glamorous well-dressed people smoking, offering each other a light, getting to chat over a cigarette, you would believe it was a good prop and a way of making friends.
I know a very nice woman who was so hurt by what a stranger - a non-smoker - said to her in the street that she never leaves her home any more.
Nice people are nice to others, and to themselves. Marketing people like to sell products. Film directors have to obey new laws. There is no new law that says it's OK to be horribly rude to someone who likes the smell of tobacco, or is too shy to go outdoors without one. Smokers smoke. That's what we do. It says nothing about us as people, but brings out the lout and bully in others.

i agree with the whole nice people smoke too....i smoke! but i also think that a lot of girls like the villians in the movies, they're the "bad boy" and every girl likes a little bit of "bad boy" from time to time. so by seeing the "bad boys" smoke...then maybe they too want to be bad and they'll take up smoking so they can feel a little rebellious. and THAT boosts tobacco sales....so maybe its all the tobacco industry's doing. or i might be being too analytical...

because movies portray a stereotypical world and some, or maybe alot of producers or whoever decides the "good guys" don't smoke, thinks smoking is bad and doesn't want the movie to encourage it.

When 2 persons who're tremendously attracted to one another have intercourse there'll most of the time be ardour and a connection. But you must do not forget that films will most of the time over dramatize circumstances in order that they are larger to look at.

Movies are full of stereotypes - have you seen any Arab characters as the hero lately?

because smoking is a nasty rotten habit and only the villains would be stupid enough to DO it.
