what will take that ring out. I have tried everything from OVEN cleaners to bathroom toilet bowl cleaners to rust removers to those cleaners that you need a gas mask when used. Bleach does not work... and the ring just gets darker and darker while the rest of the toilets look shiny white what is the magic to getting rid of these rings for good?

use tang - the orange drink stuff pour it in let it sit then wipe it out - the citric acid works to eat the gunk build up

if that does not work drop 2-3 efferdent tablets in (the things you use to clean dentures) let soak overnight then clean in the am!!

I once replaced a toilet because of this. The prior owner had not been using their water softener for quite some time. Here's something that I've since thought of, but didn't think to try it at the time:

(1) sponge out the water in the bowl to at least a couple inches below the rust ring.

(2) soak the ring with the Zep version of CLR (Calcium Lime Rust) which Home Depot sells. Its a stronger version of the same chemical.

If that doesn't get it out, I'm afraid replacing the toilet is probably your only remedy considering the things you've already tried.

Pour in a couple of cups of vinagar. Let it set while you clean the rest of the bathroom, then swish it with a brush, then flush.

Get a stick and tape a magic eraser on it and rub the stain away.

Once you get it off it won't return very quickly.
