A heavier weight will mean it will be harder to pump, a heavier weight of course cannot fit in between the tighter clearances in modern engines, and causes more wear.

You will be just fine with a 5w-30 oil, of any good name brand.

the oil acts like a 5 weight in the cold, and it IS a 30 weight at operating temp.... "W" stands for winter, not weight.

BTW, some manufacturer's are starting to move over to using 5w-20 (20 weight oils) don't be worried..... they will protect the engine just the same, oil analysis's have proved it does even better! in some engines.

Yes!!! Most new cars have more complex engines and need the correct oil. BMW for instance uses a 5w30 so their VANOS system does not clog up. Check the owners manual for which oil you need. Also more and more cars need synthetic oil.

Please check your owner's manual for the correct type of engine oil.

You can, however, use different oil to increase or decrease the protection for the engine.

heavier engine oil will be stickier, so some energy will be lost, but better protection for the engine.
lighter engine oil will not be as sticky (viscosity), so it require less energy to move around the engine block, but less protection for the engine.
