when you download anything the transfer rate obviously depends in modem's maximum speed. you and your service provider both will be using modems for connection. The MODEM WITH LOWER SPEED WILL DETERMINE SPEED OF DOWNLODING.

That's what it's all about! You have a dial-up service that can provide you with a maximum download speed of 56kbps(kilobytes per second). Unfortunately for you, you rarely see that much speed with your dial-up and you get "punted". DSL on the other hand, has download speeds of up to 100Mbps (megabytes per second) and I've never been "punted" off my DSL. Now, upload speeds are much slow than that even. The modem has gone the way of the floppy drive. They don't include them on your new computer unless you request and pay for them.

When downloading stuff, the modem speed is a limitation. But a download manager will increase the download speed. You can download one at http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/
But I don't know how much it will increase since its a 56kbps modem.
Hope this help.:)

Download rate is dependent on your modem, service, line integrity, and connection to the network.
Get yourself DSL or Cable Broadband.

It not only depends on your modem but it depends on quality of your phone line, weather, outside interference and several other things. Even with ADSL, BB, and the host of other ways of accessing thre are things that may cause problems with downloading speeds. If you want to go faster then get ADSL or one of the other ways of accessing.

there are many factors that affect your download / upload speeds
1) the type of connection you're on (DSL, 56k dial up, Cable, fibre optics, microwave, satellite etc etc) each has its own respective limits
2) your subscription theres 512 kbps / 128 kbps dsl and theres 1024 / 512 kbps dsl as well. ask your ISP
3) your distance from the exchange or from where all phones in your area connect to ( you maybe suffering from signal loss?)
4) the quality of copper of your phone line. yes, the line that goes into the wall socket and the line that goes from your house to the post if its bad copper you'd cop a bad download / upload rate.
I suggest upgrading to DSL if it fits your budget :D
