About once every month or so.

Actually benchmark testing is starting to prove very little value to defragging. I still do it just because I always have but it isn't the panacea a lot of people think it is.

It is often debateable of whether defragmenting your hard drive is a good thing or not. Although it is said to re-arranging things so the system loads programs faster, it is often the opposite where programs lagg when opening because it was moved from its origninal position. I would not recommend defragmenting unless your computer is completely lagged down, afterall, don't fix it unless it is broken.

Defragmenting is often like cleaning your room and stuffing everythng into the closet. You get yourself feeling good that you've cleaned your room, though you never think about where the clutter goes.

It depends a lot on what software you are using to perform the defrag. "Ineffective" is too kind a word for the most commonly used programs.

I highly recommend OODefrag. I have mine set to run automatically every time the screen saver runs. Whether or not it actually starts a defrag will depend on the state of the hard disk.

You should do a disk defragment every month about. But it really depends on how much you have used your hard drive. If for a month all you have done is type documents on MW and that is basically it than it does not really need it. But if you have been doing, lets say, photography, game downoads, computer updates, and using big files, than you should do it maiinly after doing a lot of that.
Hope this helps

The time period you should defrag your system based on a few things; (1) Are you running on NTFS or FAT32. If its FAT32 then more times than if its NTFS (2) Are you running Windows XP or another version of windows prior to XP. If so for example if your running Windows 98 you should do it at least once a week. (3) If you are constanly working on files or deleting/adding new ones to your system then maybe even 2 times a week especially on any other version than XP & XP formatted FAT 32 I would say 1-2 times a month.

Depends upon how much you use your computer. But still, if you use your computer on daily basis, you must defrag your computer once a month

i feel defragmenting is not really useful although some say it is. I feel that if a computer gets to messy, REFORMAT.

It should be done at least once every two weeks, if you use your computer a lot. Add and remove or download programs and then delete them.
