I think man always had somewhat of an intelligence higher than all the animals however I think that developed over time to build upon previous learning and technology not an "aintellectual" man. Most people could not tell you how to kill, clean and dress a chicken yet most cook with chicken every day but most people can tell you how to sign on to the internet but back in the 1800's there was no internet so noone knew that but they knew more survival type skills and what was relevant for their age. I think we have progressively invented things to make our lives easier and therefore our knowledge base has evolved and changed accordingly not who we are physiologically neurologically speaking. I will give it this we have adapted physcally like peoples in the tropics having more melanin in their skin ect.
