Winter!!!

In the winter you can find rate as low as $300. from the U.S. However in the summer it's hard to find anything less than $1,000.

Keep an eye out on Northwest Airlines & Delta (their code share). More times than not if you are flying from the U.S. they will be your cheapest.

BTW the down side to the winter is the short days, you might want to split the difference and go during the spring or fall. ONE WARNING, if you choose spring, make sure you don't book during Queensday, unless you have your hotel booked and paid for. Queensday is one BIG party, and all hotels will be full.

You don't say from where, so it's difficult to determine.
In general, fares go up in the summer, and drop in September, because ridership falls.

Your best bet for finding cheap flights is to check the travel section of the Sunday newspaper, especially for major cities like Chicago and New York. I have seen round-trip to Europe as low as $400, usually on odd airlines like Kuwaiti Airlines (they stop in Amsterdam on their way to the mid-east).
