You know, that's a very intriguing question. I've always thought that the most likely relationship between gov't and religion was that they used each other symbiotically to keep the unwealthy people obedient.

But just perhaps, people start to have an irrational idea that the gov't is there to save, protect, or comfort them, when it only does the opposite in reality. Just like religion.
