One name: Steve Dalkowski. You could talk about him for five minutes or five hours, but he might be the most interesting baseball figure of all time, though he never made the majors. He was a minor league phenom who played in the 1960s and was rumored to throw 110 mph. Not surprisingly, he had massive control problems and just when he started to put it all together, he blew out his elbow. I remember in '97, teams were trying to land Jim Leyland who was a managerial icon down in Pittsburgh. He was either in retirement or thought about it, not sure. Anyways, the Marlins landed him......he took them to a World Series title. Being a Red Sox fan I was a little befuddled when he called being a manager for Boston the greatest job in baseball or somewhere along those lines.

Press didn't know if that was sincere or not because he blew the team off, but I took it as a complement.
