One of the smartest ways to go, is to go through vintage dress patterns. Then take one to a dress maker and have it made in modern fabrics. The vintage styles are very in now, the dress will fit perfect from the start, and you will save a lot of money. Also never thell them you are willing to pay 1500$ or you will. When you bring in the material and pattern tell them you want to check out different prices and what you get for the cost. Ask to see samples. Then take the extra 1000$ you are saving and put it towards the wedding. Maybe help out the bridesmaides pay for their dress. Weddings are very expensive when you're in the bridal party, and I am sure they would love the help.

Don't go online! I would recommend buying OFFLINE.
1) Local Bridal Stores
look up the yellow pages; you will get something unique and a great value for your price.
2) David's Bridal
3) Macy's
Good areas - they have different stocks based on areas
4) Ethical stores like oriental stores, mediterranean stores if you want something of that kind

Try these stores: Jessica Mcclintock (look at their website, but there isn't much off the site there isn't much good but, I HIGHLY recommend going to the store, there are OUTSTANDING dresses they are really fun) Caraz, they have a store in Glendale and Beverly Hills, (they also have nice things but you have to look) Noelle is also good, they have nice floor length dresses.
But for you I recommend you going to the Caraz or Noelle for an engadement party! (I know they're both in the Glendale Galleria and might be located near you)!
GOOD LUCK
