problem with manual transmission (3 on tree style)?

i have a 49 plymouth with 3 on the tree and it will not shift into 1st or reverse. i have tried adjusting the linkage and was wondering if anyone else has had this problem or something like it?

Synchronizes or throw out bering or linkage bent

It's probably the interlock on the column that is worn.
