I have a number of gay friends who do - one is even the Australian leader of a worldwide christian youth movement. It was hard for them to reconcile the two lifestyles though. They are all Catholic and have been told they are wrong for a large part of their lives - luckily they found support within the church. I don't go to church myself but support them as I know how.

As most people have said, it varies. There's a general feel of rejection, which can make it harder for the gay community as a whole to feel comfortable in a church. I'm lucky to have a church that I'm mostly comfortable with. There are moments that discomfort arises, but I deal with it.

Anyone can have a relation with God regardless of church status. This is generally my case when I'm away from home. I have high standards for what church I attend in general, beyond the gay issue. I was born and raised Southern Baptist. I don't claim the denomination anymore, but I do claim Christianity. My prayers and reading have led me to the conclusion that homosexuality isn't the sin everyone makes it out to be and that I was made this way by God for a reason.

To each his own, eh?

Yes, GLBT persons are believers in God, many are even ordained ministers, deacons, lay leaders, sit on boar of Elders at their respective churches. There are some GLBT persons who believe in a higher power, however, refuse to attend church because of the hypocrisy that runs through them. They refuse to attend mainstream churches and even refuse to attend churches that are predominantly GLBT persons or are what many mainstream churches are billing themselves as open and affirming. Some GLBT African-Americans still attend churches where the preacher will sometimes preach against homosexuality --so therefore Lowell O --your assertion that gays attend liberal churches is in error.

And no, goshimwaycool, I’m an ordained minister and a lesbian and there isn’t anywhere in the bible that states gay people (specifically and exclusively) are going to hell. We’re all going to go if we don’t learn how to treat and love each other.

As sougirl76 posted, the reconciliation between a persons sexual orientation and their religion is a hard one. When you have heard all your life that God hates you because you are gay and then another Preacher tells you that God loves you for who you are because God made you -- that can take a while to wrap around your brain. It did me.

Some GLBT people have been brutally rejected from the church, therefore, they refuse to even set foot in one. Some church people are so judgmental and full of contempt and damnation -- I wouldn’t want to be a part of their congregations. The only way I’d set foot in those buildings if God herself came down here and gave me a direct order to do so.

Good for you sailor delta.

I'm sure some do. I really don't know. If you're wondering if a gay person really can believe in God (since the Bible says those people will go to hell, right? sorry, I'm not up on my Bible readings), I guess I don't know. I just think that those people who are gay can't really stop from being gay. I mean, they could just not do anything with anyone, but I don't know.

Believe it or not, gays and lesbians ARE people, too. Among them, there are believers, nonbelievers, and everything else you will find among straight people, except of course men in love with women, and women in love with men. Why is it so difficult to understand?
