Pink Floyd deserves their own genre of music. It isn't just "rock"; it isn't just "progressive rock"; they encompass both of those with a heavy dose of blues, jazz, classical and folk thrown in. NOBODY sounds like them; anything that comes close is like a bad parody. They are commonly dismissed as "stoner music" but that misses the point. Probably the biggest Floyd Fanatic I've ever met -tons of bootlegs, etc- was a total straight edge; never drank, never did drugs. Sure, the Floyd sounds great when you're stoned, but the irony is that Syd Barrett was the only real hard druggy in the group (as opposed to pothead), and he bowed out early.
"Animals" has always been my favourite Pink Floyd album. I think "Dark Side Of The Moon" and "The Wall" are seriously overrated. I'm not crazy about the albums they made after Roger Waters quit; Dave Gilmour is a hell of a guitarist but he just lacks Waters' artistic vision and social conscience. Maybe the original group will reform and tour; Waters and Gilmour have both hinted at it. It'd be nice; I saw "Pink Floyd" on the Pulse/Division Bell tour and it just didn't seem like the Floyd, even if it was three fourths of them. Hearing David Gilmour singing "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and the rest of the oldies just wasn't the same.
