Drug users are nothing but trash anyways. They should all be locked up and kept away from others. All they do is ruin other people's lives.

Yes- we should be harder- But locking them up only deters the problem temporally. I think first offense drug counseling/training, as well as very strict probation with random testing.
If probation is broken, then move towards a rehab program and follow the offender for a few years. Also provide positive influences in their lives- obviously they have turned to drugs because they are missing something in their life-
On the other hand if they kill someone while under the influence (this can even go with alcohol/weed- eye- for an eye- See ya!)

IN CRIMINAL LAW, THERE ARE A FEW RULES CONCERNING CRIME AND PUNISHMENT.
ONE IS THE SO CALLED INSANITY RULE WHICH PROVIDES THAT "IF THE DEFENDANT WAS NOT ABLE TO DISTINGUISH RIGHT FROM WRONG AT THE TIME OF THE CRIME" THEN HE WAS INSANE AT THAT TIME.
ANOTHER RULE IS THAT THE ONLY TIME ONE CAN BE EXCUSED FROM HAVING COMMITTED A CRIME IS WHEN THIS PERSON WAS TOTALLY UNAWARE OF COMMITTING A CRIME-BASICALLY THAT MEANS THAT THE PERSON HAD TO BE UNCONSCIOUS -- AND THE ONLY TIME THAT THIS COULD BE THE CASE IS WHEN ONE SLEEPWALKS WHICH IS A RARITY.
BY LEGAL DEFINITION IS A CRACK ADDICT OR METH ADDICT ABLE TO DISTINGUISH---THEY DO KNOW WHAT THEIR NEEDS ARE AND HOW TO GET IT. UNFORTUNATELY FOR MOST OF THEM, DOP THEY SLIDE INTO A STATE OF MIND WHERE ONLY ONE THING IS IMPORTANT, AND THAT IS TO GET THE NEXT FIX, NO MATTER WHAT IT TAKES. SINCE THEY MADE THE CHOICE AT SOME POINT IN THEIR LIFE TO USE CRACK OR METH, CAN THEY NOT EXPECT TO BE FREE OF ANY PUNISHMENT JUST BECAUSE THEY DECIDED TO USE. NO MATTER WHAT, YOU DO THE CRIME YOU DO THE TIME. I DO NOT THINK THAT THEY SHOULD GET PUNISHED HARDER THAN OTHERS---HAVING TO GO TO PRISON FOR A CRIME, AND COMING OUT OF THEIR DRUG INDUCED STUPOR--HAVING TO REALIZE WHAT THEY HAVE DONE AND WHERE IT HAS PUT THEM IS A PRETTY HARSH PUNISHMENT IN ITSELF. IN ADDITION, THERE IS A DEFINITION OF WHAT CONSTITUTES A CRIME, AND A CLEAR PUNISHMENT ALONG WITH IT---YOU CANNOT JUST WRITE LAWS FOR ADDICTS BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE A FORM OF DISCRIMINATION THAT CAN EASILY BE CHALLENGED VIA THE SUPREME COURT.
OVERALL, I WOULD SAY THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE THE SAME PUNISHMENT AS A NON-ADDICT WOULD GET FOR THE SAME TYPES OF CRIME---BUT THEY ALSO SHOULD GET DRUG REHABILITATION WHILE INCARCERATED. IT MAKES LITTLE SENSE NOT TO REHABILITATE THEM, KEEP THEM UNTIL THEIR TIME IS UP AND THEN RELEASE THEM WITH NOWHERE TO GO. THAT'S JUST SETTING THEM UP FOR FAILURE. I DO BELIEVE THAT THERE SHOULD BE A SAFETY NET FOR AFTER THEIR TIME IS UP, SO THAT THEIR CHANCES OF NOT GOING BACK TO LIFE OF DRUGS WILL BE GREATER.

I live in Kitsap County, WA which has one of the highest methanphetmine problems in the country. I think the best solution is to send those who use to rehab and those who cook and distribute meth should be locked away for a long time. Not only does cooking meth andanger those who live in the house, but also the community and neighborhood because of the chemicals. it's really sad to watch meth addicts kill themselves slowly.

Their lives are punishment enough. It is well known how dangerous those two drugs are. If people still choose to do it, then cracking down on them harder won't deter them.

Yes they should get harsher sentences. In our state this month, a couple were charged with the murder of their infant daughter, after she died, to which they found lethal amounts of meth in her body from the secondhand smoke.

I guess...but I think the dealers and the cookers should get the harshest punishment. That's where the problem originates.

THE DEALERS DESERVE THE HARSHIST PUNISHMENT AND PEOPLE THAT DEAL SHOULD BE GIVEN 10 YEARS OR MORE WITH NO PAROLE. PEOPLE HOOKED ON THAT STUFF NEED TO UNDERGO A DRY OUT PROGRAM AND BE GIVEN ONE CHANCE AND AFTER THAT, JAIL OR PRISON TIME.

i think most drug addict cases are really sad......they probably didnt plan on getting addicted and not caring about anyhting else but drugs....if their only crime is being addicted they should be given a chance to go to treatment and rebuild their life.....but if they are abusing their kids robbing people etc.... they need to go to jail
