You might lose weight at first, but you'll also screw up your metabolism. Skipping meals signals the body that food is scarce and it needs to conserve resources. It is only in the past hundred years or so we've had a ready supply of food all the time; before that, periodic famines were a fact of life. In order to survive famine, the body slows down. Body temperature, pulse rate, and activity level will drop, as the body battens down the hatches to survive the famine. What's worse, some of the weight you lose will not be fat, it will be muscle and even bone!

Paradoxically, the body under these conditions conserves energy by making MORE FAT whenever possible. You can actually gain weight on a diet of less than 1000 calories a day, if you eat them as one large meal in the evening. The body figures, "we've been starving, and at last there is food. Who knows when there will be food again? We'd better sock away as much of this as possible, as fat, to make it thru another starving day tomorrow." So hormone levels shift into fat production mode, causing a characteristic feeling of lethargy after a heavy meal. Restricting food can lead to a downward spiral that could land a person in the hospital or worse. Better small frequent meals, to keep the metabolic fires burning steady.

Believe it or not, you can lose more weight on a slight caloric reduction and small frequent meals, than you can on a drastic caloric reduction and infrequent meals. Especially if you get enough exercise. The amount of calories burned during exercise may not seem like much, but frequent activity keeps the metabolism going good even when you are not active, and also builds muscles, which burn more calories even when they;'re just sitting there.

at first you will lose weight. then your body will adapt to the situation by slowing your metabolism in an effort to compensate. just remember, when you don't feed your body, it will take it's nourishment from somewhere else. It will usually take it from your liver first, then the muscles. The brain and heart are the muscles requiring the most energy to run. If your body has to choose, it will choose the brain first. If you survive your heart shutting down along with damage to other organs, inevitably your brain will shut down, because while other parts of the body can use what is called "gluconeogenesis", where liver metabolism releases glucose to keep levels up enough for the body to function, the brain cannot utilize it. It would be like using diesel on a gasoline operated car. both are forms of fuel, but both cannot be used on the same machinery. if you are looking to lose weight, i suggest you see a registered dietician who can help you set healthy goals by selecting healthy choices in food. you also should consult your doctor. perhaps your perception of body weight is not correct and being effected by what you see on tv and magazines. exercise is good , too. you lose fat and increase muscle mass and increase your metabolism, which helps you burn fat faster and easier.

You'll get thin eventually, you'll have headaches immediately, and then you'll want to start eating again. Believe me if I don't eat for 6 hours my stomach starts calling for food, then my head starts pounding. Eat.
