My personal favorites are Megadeth, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest but I'm suprised nobody mention death or black metal.

I would pick Zeppelin, but they were too diverse to be considered simply metal, so I'd probably go with Sabbath.

well although many of the bands mentioned here were good ,the best hard rock band was culture club.when george micheal was out front .

Good question. I personally like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, but the best has to be Slayer...no wait...Megadeath...oh, I don't know! They are all so good!
