heat is what kills a computer, well heat and dust. you should have some times were your computer is off, as it can help it cool down, also you don't wast electricity.

my home computer is on almost 24/7 though.
It has an excellent cooling system (its a computer I built so I know its done right) and when I am at home I am normally using it, when I am at work I remote connect to it so I can go to any pages work blocks (job hunting lol) and when I am asleep it is downloading programs. I run it off about one night a month, just to let it shut down, if they are on to long they tend to run kinda funny and sluggish.
if I am not downloading anything I do turn it off to save power.

with it on all the time you might also get more dust in your fans and heat sinks, you can clear this out with a can of air, you will be amazed how much dust is in that little thing between your processor and the fan. the dust also keeps your computer from being able to cool down, and heat kills computers (also why you shouldn't place a laptop on your bed or other surface that cuts airflow)

Thanks for asking this question as I have always wondered about this... my old computer broke down because the "on/off" button broke from the inside... by turning it off and on all the time...(plus it was 6 years old) and I really did need a new updated computer... but now when I turn on my computer... I will leave it on until I go to bed. I have cut a large square hole in the wood back of my desk's computer processors compartment so that my processor is able to get "air" and I have access to the back of the processor without having to slide it out of the compartment. It allows it to get cooled off too... and I keep the dust out of that area easier too. I cut a hole 12" x 8" in the area where the connections are on the back of my processor... Real handy, I must say!

Most people will tell you to turn it off when not in use, for a number of reasons. Overheating can damage it. Screen burn-in if you don't have a good screensaver. Wasted electricity. There is also something called MTBF -- mean time between failure. This is the "average" usage time the components (hard drive, CPU, etc) will last before they fail. So leaving it on 24/7 means parts may fail sooner. Now the reality of that is, most MTBF's are in the thousands of hours so you will probably upgrade or replace your PC before most of them fail. All that said, I shut mine down maybe twice a month, overnight. My work one stays on all the time.

PCs need an occasional reboot to free memory, clear temp files and keep them running properly. Also saves money if it is off when not need. Plus keeps out hackers, etc. Lets the computer cool. And does not stress or wear out the computer by starting it any more then turning on your TV wears it out. So turn it off.

(But mine is one 99% of the time. Go figure...)

My Daughter says her computer at work stays
on all week, shuts it down for the weekend, and
the one at home runs 24 hours unless She or
her husband cut it off, there's always someone
on it most of the time - Don't think it matters.

I personally turn mine off when I am done with it...but at work we are supposed to leave them on 24/7...I think it is harder on them when they never get a chance to cool off....JMO
