Gone with the Wind is about a determined Southern "lady" named Scarlett O'Hara who does anything possible to survive the Civil War and the Reconstruction era afterwards. At first, Scarlett is a young, attractive lady of the South who yearns to be a lady. But she gradually changes into a hard-willed and cold-hearted woman as the times challenge her endurance. Along the way she meets a man or ruffian (to be more exact) named Rhett Butler. He falls desperately in love with Scarlett, but she vows to always be "in love" with Ashley Wilkes, her sister-in-law's husband. Finally, he gets her to marry him since she is tempted by the money he has. They marry, but it slowly falls apart because Scarlett is supposedly still "in love" with Ashley Wilkes. In the end, Scarlett realizes that Ashley wasn't the man she loved all along. It was Rhett who was her true love. But Scarlett realizes this too late as Rhett is leaving her.
So basically, Gone with the Wind is about how loving, losing, and surviving it all.
