We could get rid of income taxes and just raise sales taxes to ridiculously high rates. We could kidnap people from other countries and reinstate slavery and then use the money they would be making if they were free to pay for roads, education, federal defense, etc... instead. We could strike oil in amounts similar to those found in Saudi Arabia so we'd never have to charge taxes again. We could eliminate public schools, stop building roads and infrastructure, and get rid of our military. But I don't think anyone would care for the first three ways, and the last one just isn't going to happen.

Simple, I am surprised that you have not stumbled on the answer by yourself.
In the early 1900's, the demands that our citizens placed on the government to provide services, act in the common defense, etc. called for a monetary expenditure that far exceeded the income of the government. Therefore, the Federal Income Tax was established.
If the Income Tax were abolished, we would only see other taxes increase. Would you rather pay a 25 or 30 percent sales tax instead? It makes no matter how or on what you pay, you still need to fund the government.
Now, if you want to spend it more wisely, find more people who see things your way and get elected so that you can change things.

If you think there were no taxes paying for the Civil War, check out this website: http://www.tax.org/museum/1861-1865.htm. We fought the Brits because we wanted our own free, democratic, society, the Boston Tea Party was protesting double taxation, and served as an impetus to the revolution. The founding fathers envisioned a country where the rich helped the poor, through the government by the people, etc. So we really never really lived without taxes of some kind in this country, and hopefully we never will.

Before income taxes, the federal government raised the money it needed mostly by charging large tariffs on imports and exports. That means that people did pay taxes, directly as merchants or indirectly as consumers. Governments have always required money to operate, so taxes are always raised from somewhere. You don't get something for nothing. In fact, US citizens pay much lower tax rates than citizens of most other countries, particularly considering the extent of government services those taxes provide. (Before you start having a hissy-fit over government services, ask yourself seriously whether you like feeling safe eating food from the grocery store, drinking water from the tap, or putting money in a bank.) Have you ever considered that a big part of our country's problems might be people like you, who seem to feel no obligations towards their society, no duty towards their country, and oppressed as all hell when asked to do their share? That's not rugged individualism, it's sociopathy.
You've probably got valid criticisms about how fairly the tax burden is shared or how effectively the government spends what we give them, but that viewpoint will never be taken seriously while you indulge in this "world without taxes" nonsense.

To me it's not no taxes, it's fair & reasonable taxes. I don't know why we all can't just pay a % of our income across the board, low, middle and high income brackets alike. No exceptions. If we all paid 2% of our income to the government with no exemptions, just think how simple the forms would be, and all the money that would be saved on paper work alone. Maybe we could get rid of the IRS !!!!!!!!

I don't like to buy land or anything, because if you think about it, you never truly own it. This is supposed to be the free country, but it is not. The state can STEAL your property and sale it if you own it and don't pay taxes. I don't know why anyone would want to buy something like that knowing they will never own it. It all comes down to the fact that they will use anything to get more money for free. Taxes are Thieves way of living.

If you hate the country that much move, it would be great with one less repuglican. Taxes are an honor to pay. It is your duty to support your country. What is wrong is how that they spend the money, and allowing the rich to skate without paying their fair share.

The Sixteenth Amendment (1913) authorizes the income tax. Agree with it or not, but it is your Constitutional responsibility.
