Probably because they don't have enough in their life to occupy their time. I often wonder how people find the time to follow all the minutia about celebrities. How is that going to benefit them?

Jealousy, admiration, fantasy, envy, love, lust. Sometimes people see in others things they wish they could have or be and they obsess with being close to them because that is the only way they can be close to what they want, they can't change. Example is the girl who has alot of money, looks, friends, popularity. Other girls want that so they try to mimic her and some of them try to be her friend just to be close to what they want, they know they can't magically get money or looks so they use her.

One of the main reasons is low self esteem. Many people think they need to live through other people because they are not comfortable with who they are. They have no self worth.

They have something the other doesn't have so they start idealizing and obsessing. Everyone does it in some degree. Jealousy is one big kick off for it.

Because they lead such boring lives that they
"transfer" themselves to the other person's lives.
They live in a fantasy of thier own making...
