Smoking while you are pregnant is real bad. The thing I hate the most is to hear a woman say that the reason she smokes is to lower the baby's birth weight because she doesn't want to have a large baby. Yes, smoking does lower the baby's birth weight but that is NEVER a good thing. Having a smaller baby doesn't always make the delivery easier. And another effect is premature birth which is not good for the baby's lungs. The lungs are one of the last things to develop. Anything that you eat or take in goes to the baby...even the carbon monoxide from the cigarette. The carbon monoxide could effect the placenta which could reduce the baby's intake of food. There are a lot of other things. Here, read about more here, I think they might even have advice on how to quit. http://www.lungusa.org/site/pp.asp?c=dvLUK9O0E&b=33573

Trust me it is very very bad. It screwed me over for my entire life. My mom smoked and I was born with mild but stil is autism. I love my mom and everything but this I can never forgive her for. Please please don't smoke during pregnacy. There is a whole slew of birth defects that could happen.
